Avoiding Paddle Clash – Pickleball Mini-Lesson

Today I want to show you a move the Pros make, that Amateurs usually do not, and why we are clashing paddles so much.

Let’s say I’m in my position and I go for a ball, and the ball comes back again and my partner wants to get in my way, like literally smashes into me and tries to take it away. Check it out…

As you can see we’re talking about a common mistake that many amateur pickleball players make, which is clashing paddles with their partners. Not only is it dangerous, but it can also disrupt the game’s momentum.

So here’s the thing – as pros, we know that the key to a successful partnership is allowing your partner to take the ball when they’re in a better position. Momentum is everything in pickleball, and when you’re in the middle of a point, you don’t want to be worrying about colliding with your partner.

In the video, Kim and I demonstrate how taking a step back or stepping aside can make all the difference in avoiding collisions and keeping the momentum going. It’s also important to communicate with your partner and commit to the shot you’re taking. If your partner takes the next shot, that’s okay – it’s not about proving yourself, it’s about winning the point.

So the takeaway here is to prioritize teamwork, communication, and safety in pickleball. By avoiding collisions and maintaining momentum, you’ll not only improve your game but also have more fun on the court. And remember, if your partner is on your left, let them have the ball – it’s a smart move!
