Ball Movement – Pickleball Mini-Lessons with Sarah Ansboury

This week I want to talk to you a little bit about ball movement.

Our contact point is key everywhere on the court, but especially at the non-volley line. When we are trying to change directions, one of the most important things to recognize if I’m changing directions on a ball, I need time and space.

Ball Movement

So, if I’m hitting the ball cross court and then going down the line, that contact has got to be out in front and easy to change. Where you’ve got plenty of time to push through that ball. Either way you’re staying out in front, see how I’m not moving that much. Then I’m just shifting my weight and keeping my body in front.

What I see people do is step backwards to change direction on the ball, and now they’re having trouble creating opportunity. So, when you are working on direction change there’s a couple of things to think about:

Slow Down – Anytime you’re changing something, take longer to hit it.
Easier in the Air – Ideally if you are in control it’s going to be easier in the air than off the bounce. Practicing that motion out in front is key making sure that you have a target.
Be Cautious of Moving Too Much – When you are moving and giving up your position on a regular basis it’s going to be really difficult to create consistent direction change and maintain a good point situation.
