Baby It’s Hot Out There…Pickleball Heat

Recently, we recorded some record highs in many parts of the country.  As we await summers official arrival let’s talk about pickleball in the heat.

Yesterday we went out to practice in the middle of the day. Needless to say, it was hot out there. Several of the players were struggling after just a few games. Some worried about cramping or heat stroke. Of course, treating either of these conditionals means we have not prepared enough for the heat.

prevention is the key

We can’t wait till we see symptoms to deal with the heat. Instead, prevention is the key.

  1. Hydration is so important. Drinking plenty of fluids on the court is not enough. You need to work on your hydration the day and night before you play. If you know you will be playing a long tournament day…you really need to start hydrating a week prior to the event.
  2. On the court, water is not enough. In fact, water alone can flush your system of needed electrolytes. Instead, alternate between water and your favorite sports drink. If you are concerned about calories, head to a local bike shop and ask the owner’s advice.  Also, keep in mind, you need to eat small amounts throughout the day. On a tournament day, keep snacking. Nuts and berries are an easy way to get some nourishment into you ASAP.
  3. Finally, don’t forget your sunscreen and/or protective clothing. There are lots of good options today to cover our bodies. And between games, look for the shade.
Too much heat

When you begin to feel the effects of overheating place some ice on the back of your neck. You may also want to fill your hat with heatcooler water. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Slow down….sit out a few games.

If you start to feel cold, get goosebumps or start shaking….get off the court immediately. Find some shade and cool down. Once you feel better, don’t head back onto the court…head home and take it easy. If you recover fully, you will be able to play tomorrow.

We all want to play, but be careful. Hydrate before you play. Utilize a sports drink and snack when you play. And make sure you are safe in the sun and heat.

Disguising Your Shot: The Power of Direction Change
