Pickleball Practice Against a Wall

Players in some communities have difficulty getting enough court time, so they ask me how they can practice against a wall. Today, I offer some tips.

practice against a wall

Focus on One Thing at a time

When you are practicing against a wall it is important to focus on only one thing at a time.  As I have written before, too often we “practice” mindlessly…simply repeating the same bad habits again and again. Instead, use the wall to work on proper body mechanics or to address a known tendency you wish to improve. Perhaps you are a former racquetball player and know you overuse your wrist. Or perhaps you come from tennis and want to shorten your backswing. Practicing against a wall will bring you value if you focus on just one thing during your practice session.

Every time You practice

For me, there are three keys to keep in mind each and every time your practice.  These are:

  1. Pick a Target – Your goal is to have one target you are aiming to hit each and every time. . If you have a tendency to flick your wrist you paddle face will not be facing the target from the beginning to the end of your stroke. Focus on keeping your paddle open to the target and hitting your target consistently.
  2. Pick a Stroke – If you are working to shorten your backswing, pick just one stroke at a time.  If you begin with your forehand, force yourself to hit one forehand after another. If you are taking too big a backswing, it is likely you won’t be able to hit only forehands.  Focus on making contact in front of you and controlling your swing.
  3. Pick a position- The key to controlling the direction of the ball and using your body properly is engaging your lower body. If you are moving around too much, it will be difficult for you to engage your lower body and control the ball.
Focus to Improve

Whether you are practicing on a court with a drilling group…or by yourself against a wall…focus is the key. Pick a target, a stroke, and a position if you want to improve.

These drills will help you with not just getting the ball back but controlling the ball where you want it to go.

Where Does Power Come From in Pickleball?

Hint: It’s Not Your Arms. Let’s clear this up right away—power doesn’t come from your hands or arms. Swinging harder doesn’t automatically mean you’re hitting faster, stronger, or better. In fact, that mindset often does more harm than good. In pickleball, we separate power and control by the body:Power comes

Disguising Your Shot: The Power of Direction Change

Last week, we talked about cutting off the corners to create a more offensive dink. Now, let’s take that concept a step further—redirecting the ball to control the point. Why Does This Matter? The more I move my opponent, rather than moving myself, the more control I have. The goal
