Dallas Pickleball
We recently made a side trip to Texas. The official purpose of the trip was to upgrade to a much larger fifth wheel. However, of course, we were able to find time for pickleball. The pickleball and people were a lot of fun, but I found that many were unwilling to play outdoors. This was due, in part, to their desire to play only with a jug ball. [Editor’s Note: As you probably know, the jug ball is no longer listed as an approved ball for tournament play.]
I was surprised to see that even when these players went outdoors to play, they preferred to use the jug ball. Of course, there have been times when I used an indoor ball, outside. For example, on really cold days the Dura tends to crack. However, in Dallas the courts were warm.
Indoor or Outdoor Pickleball Preferences
- Playing with different balls will enable you to gain experience and as a result, you will get better.
- Playing indoors and outdoors opens up more tournament possibilities….and this experience will improve your play.
- We improve most when we pull ourselves out of our comfort zone. Challenge yourself to do things differently. Be willing to lose or make a mistake in order to elevate your game.
Making Adjustments
When I first started playing outdoor tournaments, I found I needed to make huge adjustments. Frankly, having been introduced to the game indoors I find going back to indoors after playing outdoors for a while is a lot easier. However, I know many players (like Nancy and Denise) that found moving from outdoors to indoors a major adjustment.
Regardless of whether you enjoy indoor or outdoor pickleball more, I want to recommend that you take the time to play and practice in both environments. I also want you gain experience with different balls. In preparation for a tournament, ask about what ball will be used and try to practice and play with that ball. It is fine to have a personal favorite, but you will progress faster if you move outside of your comfort zone.
