Indoor or Outdoor Pickleball

I have found that a lot of people have a strong preference for either indoor or outdoor pickleball.  Learning to play in Portland, Oregon, I was introduced to the game indoors.  In certain climates, playing only outdoors can really limit how much you can play.

We recently made a side trip to Texas.  The official purpose of the trip was to upgrade to a much larger fifth wheel. However, of course, we were able to find time for pickleball.  The pickleball and people were a lot of fun, but I found that many were unwilling to play outdoors. This was due, in part, to their desire to play only with a jug ball.  [Editor’s Note:  As you probably know, the jug ball is no longer listed as an approved ball for tournament play.]

I was surprised to see that even when these players went outdoors to play, they preferred to use the jug ball.  Of course, there have been times when I used an indoor ball, outside.  For example, on really cold days the Dura tends to crack.  However, in Dallas the courts were warm.

Indoor or Outdoor Pickleball Preferences
My preference is to play outdoors on a nice day.  But even if your preference is to stay inside, I want to encourage you to expand your options:
  1. Playing with different balls will enable you to gain experience and as a result, you will get better.
  2. Playing indoors and outdoors opens up more tournament possibilities….and this experience will improve your play.
  3. We improve most when we pull ourselves out of our comfort zone.  Challenge yourself to do things differently.  Be willing to lose or make a mistake in order to elevate your game.

Making Adjustments

When I first started playing outdoor tournaments, I found I needed to make huge adjustments.  Frankly, having been introduced to the game indoors I find going back to indoors after playing outdoors for a while is a lot easier.  However, I know many players (like Nancy and Denise) that found moving from outdoors to indoors a major adjustment.

Regardless of whether you enjoy indoor or outdoor pickleball more, I want to recommend that you take the time to play and practice in both environments. I also want you gain experience with different balls.  In preparation for a tournament, ask about what ball will be used and try to practice and play with that ball.  It is fine to have a personal favorite, but you will progress faster if you move outside of your comfort zone.

Why So Defensive - Tip

Why So Defensive? Fix Your Footwork & Weight Transfer

Too many players find themselves stuck in defensive positions way more than they need to be—and most of the time, it’s not because of bad hands or slow reactions. The real problem? Positioning and weight transfer. If you’re getting caught in the midcourt, struggling to move efficiently, or feeling like

Mastering Weight Transfer for Powerful Volleys

One of the most overlooked aspects of a strong volley is weight transfer. If you’re not engaging your lower body properly, you’re missing out on power, control, and consistency. That’s why I love this drill—it helps you learn how to shift your weight efficiently through the ball, improving both your
